Update: Vestas poised to launch new low-wind 3MW model

The new V126-3.0MW machine will have a 126-metre-diameter rotor

Danish manufacturer Vestas is to unveil a larger-rotor model of its 3MW platform turbine, purpose-designed for low-wind onshore sites in Europe.

The new V126-3.0MW machine, which will have a 126-metre-diameter rotor – creating a swept area 27% greater than the workhorse V112-3.0MW – will feature blades based on a cost-cutting structural shell concept.

The design of the 62-metre blades is calculated to "halve the capital investment in new production lines [and] improve flexibility in manufacturing", according to Vestas.

“The rotor swept area of the new V126-3.0MW wind turbine has been increased and the turbine is specifically designed to yield maximum power production on low wind sites," says Anders Vedel, executive vice president…
