France to offer two offshore zones by December, Ayrault says

The French government has confirmed plans to open two offshore wind zones for bidding by December this year.

The Treport and Noirmoutier zones will invite bids for a total of 1.3GW of capacity, made up of 700MW and 600MW respectively, says industry body France Energie Eolienne.

The new round is apparently intended as an adjunct to the country’s first round of offshore tenders, which awarded 1.93GW in April.

Treport was included in that process, but was not awarded after attracting just one bid, from utility GDF.

The government hinted that a much bigger tender will follow in 2013 to propel France towards its target of 6GW of offshore wind capacity…
