All’s well in Wells, the unlikely base for a clean-energy milestone

With its busy fish-and-chips shops and ribbon of colourful beach huts, Wells-next-the-Sea — population 2,451 — seems an unlikely candidate to be the face of Britain’s clean-energy transition.

But this holiday destination on the coast of Norfolk, eastern England, has, through a set of fateful decisions and geographic coincidences, become the operations base for Scira, the project company behind the recently completed Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm.

The way the small town has adapted to, and benefited from, Scira’s presence holds important clues about the future impact of offshore renewables on coastal communities around the UK.
