Offshore wind named as key part of Europe's maritime future

Wind is seen as one of five high-growth areas for Europe's maritime industries

The European Commission (EC) has unveiled a new maritime strategy for Europe’s coastal waters which takes into account the growing importance of the offshore wind sector.

A near five-fold increase to 170,000 offshore wind jobs is expected by the end of the decade, compared to 2010's level.

The EC's proposals for seeing so-called ‘blue growth’ in economic and employment prospects in the marine and maritime sectors identifies five specific areas with particular potential, one of which is centred around wind-power.

Offshore wind is recognised in the strategy as a key element of current and future economic activity around Europe’s coast, significantly contributing to its competitiveness and benefiting other sectors.
