AWEA terminates Exelon membership over anti-PTC moves

The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) has terminated Exelon Corporation’s membership in reaction to the largest US rate-regulated electric utility’s collaboration with groups lobbying Congress not to renew the production tax credit (PTC).

Exelon also had a seat on the AWEA board, whose directors took the decision to oust it. Board members represent a cross-section of the wind industry but developers, independent power producers and component suppliers predominate. AWEA has about 2,000 members.

Extension of the PTC, first enacted in 1992, beyond 31 December has been the wind industry’s priority this year. It pays $22/MWh inflation-adjusted for a project’s first decade in operation. This subsidy costs the federal government at least $1.2bn each year
