Fishermen’s nets final permit to begin pilot offshore project

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has approved the final permit required by developer Fishermen’s Energy for construction of a five-turbine, 25MW demonstration wind project in the Atlantic Ocean waters about 2.8 (4.5km) off Atlantic City.

USACE is designated by Congress as the coordinating permitting authority for any offshore structures such as turbines that could impede navigation, regardless of whether they are located in waters owned by the state.

With the exception of Texas and the west coast of Florida for historical reasons, each state along the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and Gulf of Mexico, owns the territory extending 3 nautical miles (5.55km) from shore.

The USACE process included input from the US Coast Guard, US Fish & Wildlife Service, National Marine Fisheries Service and other federal agencies
