Vestas on track for new era of rail-based wind blade transit

Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has begun transporting its rotor blades by rail after striking an agreement with logistics company SNCF Geodis.

Vestas says the deal significantly reduces costs and cuts CO 2 emissions, as well as helping to ease congested European roads.

In conjunction with SNCF, Vestas says it has designed Europe’s first system to transport 55-metre blades by rail.

Nine blades for its V112-3.0MW turbines are travelling from Vestas’ blade factory in Lauchhammer, Germany, to the port of Esbjerg in Denmark today.

The train of cars has a total length of almost 700 metres, “underlining the sheer size of this massive logistical challenge”, says the turbine producer.
