With all to play for in a crowded market, Brazilian wind is no place for the faint-hearted

Which turbine manufacturers will carve a niche in Brazilian wind? At this point, it is hard to tell.

There are 11 turbine makers crowded into the market, which is seen as one of the few opportunities for growth worldwide.

The government is capitalising on the desperation of manufacturers. The national development bank, BNDES, has been directed by President Dilma Rousseff to strictly police local-content rules, and is gearing up to increase requirements.

The global industry has annual manufacturing capacity of 80GW — double current demand. Brazil, however, wants more investment and more local manufacturing capacity.

Currently, there is 6-7GW of annual manufacturing capacity in Brazil. Demand is about 2GW a year.
