In Depth: Areva’s offshore turbine giants face benchmark test

First nacelles for the 80 5MW turbines being made by French energy giant Areva for Germany’s Global Tech 1 offshore wind farm are about to start trials on a state-of-the-art test bench at its Bremerhaven factory.

The company expects shipments to begin from the German North Sea port by year-end.

The €15m ($18.7m) test bench was brought on line in November. Originally built to double-check the M5000-116 machines that had to be changed out at the  Alpha Ventus offshore project in 2010 after failures in sliding bearings caused overheating, it was then set up to test all M5000s being manufactured for future projects.
