UK wind power criticisms have little basis in fact, study says

Many of the regular criticisms of wind power heard from UK politicians have no basis in fact, according to a new report published by the London-based Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) think tank.

The report concludes that many of the most common critiques of wind offered up by Conservative politicians – such as the danger of protracted calm spells, or that the need for back-up generation undermines any potential carbon savings from wind – are either grossly exaggerated or simply untrue.

Produced by the left-leaning IPPR in conjunction with Garrad Hassan, the report agrees with Conservative wonks who insist that the cost of supporting wind, both on- and offshore, must be heavily scrutinised in the years ahead.
