In Depth: Doors of opportunity opening for wind in Chile

Chile’s wind market is slowly blossoming, despite resistance from utilities, limited renewables mandates and government inaction.

Developers are increasingly interested in the country as they seek alternatives to the slowing European and US markets.

The models vary: Mainstream Renewable Power is using Chinese financing and Chinese turbines; Vestas is financing and building its own project. Given the lack of long-term contracts in Chile, both expect to sell power on the spot market. Pattern Energy, however, has signed a long-term power-purchase agreement (PPA) with Antofagasta Minerals, a mining company.
