In Depth: Rio Grande do Sul, the new home of Brazilian wind

Brazil’s Northeast region is hailed as the hub of the country’s wind industry but most of the projects registered in this year’s A-3 power tender were in the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Although one of the country’s first wind farms, the 150MW Ventos do Sul complex, was built there in 2006 by Spanish group Enerfin, the South has attracted fewer developers than the bustling Northeast. Yet that appears to be changing.

Argentina’s Impsa has announced it will build a turbine factory to supply Eletrosul, which has 90MW in operation, 482MW in construction and a 3GW pipeline, all in Rio Grande do Sul. Suzlon has also been flirting with the idea of building a factory in the state.
