Fuhrländer's Ukraine deal could unlock the door to Russia

While some turbine manufacturers look to team up with companies from Asia, salvation for Germany’s cash-strapped Fuhrländer has come in the form of a takeover by Ukrainian investors led by Maxim Efimov.

Efimov was already Fuhrländer’s joint-venture partner and main customer in Ukraine, and is general director of the Kramatorsk-based steel group Energomashspetsstal (EMSS).

A new factory in Kramatorsk that will produce Fuhrländer’s 2.5MW turbines should allow its customers to overcome the onerous local-content regulations that the Ukrainian government is introducing.

Analyst MAKE Consulting estimates that Ukraine has the potential to achieve 16GW of capacity by 2030. However, prospects are heavily dependent on the evolving political climate, with estimates of installations varying between 750MW and 1GW over the next five years.
