First foundation in at 576MW Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm

Siemens prepares to move one of Gwynt y Môr's offshore substations out of Harland and Wolff

RWE npower renewables – the UK subsidiary of German-owned renewables giant RWE Innogy – has installed the first monopile foundation at its 576MW Gwynt y Môr wind farm project.

The monopile, placed at a depth of 23.2 metres using the heavy-lift vessel Stanislav Yudin, was the first of 160 that will be installed at the wind farm off the coast of North Wales in Liverpool Bay.

Gwynt y Môr project director Toby Edmonds says the monopile installation “marks a next crucial stage of the two year construction period of this flagship wind farm” which began with the application of scour protection in January.
