SSE drops Scots wind plan on bird fears, Infinis gets 55MW OK

SSE Renewables is pulling out of a planned 94MW wind farm on Scotland’s Isle of Lewis after deciding that environmental constraints would force the project to shrink too much.

SSE's decision came as the Scottish government granted planning consent for Infinis Energy to build a 55MW wind development on Scotland's mainland.

The renewables division of utility SSE says after studying the available data, it believes the risk of bird collisions in particular will make the 26-turbine project at Lewis’s Pairc Estate impossible. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said several species faced risks from turbines.

The company had already miniaturised drastically the Pairc project compared to the 57-turbine, 205MW plant it originally proposed in 2007.
