Largest wind farm installation vessel is handed over

Pacific Orca will have the capacity to transport and install up to 12 3.6MW turbines

Swire Pacific Offshore Operations has taken delivery of the Pacific Orca wind farm installation vessel (WIV) from Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje shipyard in South Korea.

The six-legged jack-up unit, the largest WIV yet built, will sail out later this year with plans to work on the installation of monopiles for the West of Duddon Sands project, before moving on to Danish developer Dong Energy’s Borkum Riffgrund 1 wind farm in the German North Sea.

Measuring 161 metres long, 49 metres wide, and with a draught of 10.4 metres, the Pacific Orca will have the capacity to transport and install up to a dozen 3.6MW wind turbines at a go in water depths down to 60 metres.
