Final 6MW turbine in place at Belgium's Thornton Bank 2

The final turbine for Thornton Bank 2 was installed yesterday

Germany’s REpower has installed the last of 30 turbines at the second phase of Thornton Bank – the world’s first offshore wind park to use 6MW machines.

REpower’s latest generation of turbines have an output of 6.15MW, giving Thornton Bank 2 a nameplate capacity of 185MW – adding to the 30MW in place at Thornton Bank 1 since 2009.

The final turbine was installed yesterday, and the first machines are already in the process of being energised.

Thornton Bank developer C-Power opted for a lean contracting model, in which Suzlon-owned REpower was tasked with supplying and installing the turbines, ABB was in charge of the electrical kit, and Belgian offshore specialist DEME handled everything else.
