Dong and Siemens in 1.8GW deal for 6MW offshore wind turbine

Siemens' 6MW turbine

Danish offshore wind giant Dong Energy and turbine manufacturer Siemens have signed a framework agreement for 300 of the German group's new 6MW machine, with a total capacity of 1.8GW.

Dong intends to deploy the Siemens 6MW turbine – a direct-drive machine with a 154-metre rotor – at wind farms in the UK in the 2014-2017 period.

”The agreement will enable Dong Energy to install a significantly larger turbine from 2014," says Carsten Krogsgaard Thomsen, acting chief executive of Dong.

He adds: ”The agreement on the supply of the new turbines totalling 1,800MW is an important step...and will help make offshore wind more competitive.”

The deal underlines Siemens' dominance in offshore wind turbine supply, shown earlier this week by industry
