New bid to sell Irish wind power to UK as Element plans 3GW

Element plans to export power across the Irish Sea to Wales

Element Power has seized on the uncertainty surrounding the UK renewables market by unveiling a plan to flow 3GW of wind power generated in the Irish midlands across the sea to Wales.

The initiative echoes a 5GW proposal tabled last month by Dublin-based developer Mainstream Renewable Power – but Element has the advantage of having obtained a firm 3GW grid-connection offer from the UK’s National Grid.

Element’s ambitious plan – named “Greenwire” – represents a bet against the UK’s onshore and offshore wind sectors, which remain hindered by regulatory uncertainty.

This week UK energy secretary Ed Davey admitted that new incentive levels for onshore wind would not be announced before parliament takes its summer recess, despite previous promises to the contrary.
