Vestas ban puts Brazil's wind industry at risk, warns analyst

The strength of Brazil’s wind industry will be seriously jeopardised if Vestas turbines remain off the authorisation list for use in projects eligible for loans from the national development bank BNDES, an analyst warns.

The bank has removed Vestas and several other equipment makers from its authorised suppliers list, as it completes an audit of all manufacturers.

The companies were found to be not complying with rules stipulating that at least 60% of equipment content be locally sourced and that manufacturers operate a factory or assembly plant in Brazil.

Brian Gaylord, Latin America analyst at MAKE Consulting, says: “The major development here is Vestas. The other equipment manufacturers are not nearly as critical to the health of the Brazilian wind market.”
