ScottishPower radar deal could aid 110MW of wind plans

A handful of Scottish wind developers have brokered a deal that gives them access to data generated at a radar station owned by ScottishPower Renewables (SPR), with implications for a number of blocked projects across the country.

The initial deal with four developers should see at least 110MW of capacity currently hamstrung by radar concerns unblocked, including Gamesa’s 80MW Harelaw project, says the Iberdrola-owned utility.

SPR built the radar station on the site of the disused Kincardine power station along the Firth of Forth as a solution to the problems posed for aviation and weather radar by its 322MW Whitelee wind farm.

By fusing the data gleaned at SPR’s radar station with that generated at Edinburgh and Glasgow airports, air traffic controllers are able to put together a clear picture…
