Germans to settle grid 'liability issue' to ease offshore blockage

The liability issue has turned into one of the biggest bottlenecks for Germany's offshore wind sector

As it faces intense criticism over mushrooming delays to German offshore wind projects, the country’s government intends to propose a solution to one critical issue – who is liable for damaged grid links – by the end of next week.

Hans-Joachim Otto, parliamentary state secretary in the economics ministry, says the issue is the subject of intense discussion within Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cabinet, and a proposal is likely to be put before parliament before its summer recess commences on 6 July.

Although no formal legislation is expected until later this year, such a proposal would shore up investors’ confidence in Berlin’s commitment to untangling the “liability issue” as quickly as possible.
