Meridian to push on with 60MW Mill Creek wind in New Zealand

Mill Creek will join the neighbouring West Wind project near Wellington

New Zealand’s Merdian Energy expects its Mill Creek wind farm to be fully operational by mid-2014 after announcing that it is ready to start building the 60MW project.

Mill Creek – which will use 26 Siemens 2.3MW turbines – will cost NZ$169m ($132.6m) to construct and NZ$3.3m a year to operate, says the power producer.

The company originally wanted the wind farm, northwest of Wellington, to feature an extra five turbines, but was forced to scale it back following objections.

Meridian has been waiting to begin work at the site since obtaining approval last August. It says a combination of a strong New Zealand dollar, falling steel prices and “competitive” turbine costs made this the right time to proceed, Log in to read complete article.
