1GW trio of wind projects helps South Australia set the pace

Snowtown will be extended to 370MW

With three major wind developers revealing plans to add more than 1GW of capacity by 2015 in South Australia (SA), the state is quickly becoming the country’s wind-energy leader.

The A$900m ($880m) 315MW Hornsdale wind farm proposed for the state’s north has been approved by planning authorities.

The project, owned by the Australian subsidiary of South African merchant bank Investec, have been submitted to the state government for final approval, a spokesman tells Recharge.

The 105-turbine project, north of Jamestown, will generate about one terawatt hour of electricity a year, enough to supply 180,000 homes.

Installation is expected by the middle of next year, with operations starting in late 2014.
