UK spells out plans to cut offshore wind costs by 30%

A new industry/government Offshore Wind Programme Board (OWPB) will lead the UK’s push to reduce costs by 30% over the next seven years to £100 ($155) per MWh for around 18GW of capacity.

A series of recommendations covering the supply chain, innovation, consenting, contracting strategies and planning have been set out in the Offshore Wind Cost Reduction Task Force report.

At the heart of the recommendations is a push towards “a more inclusive and collaborative approach” between developers and the supply chain, which the report calls “alliancing”.

This includes mechanisms such as “early and informal supply-chain involvement in project design to a more fully collaborative and autonomous project structure that empowers participants to manage issues and processes more effectively to reach project cost targets”.
