BOEM decides smaller OCS wind energy area off Massachusetts

The US Interior Department is moving ahead with a smaller area on the outer continental shelf (OCS) off Massachusetts with strong wind energy potential that it may open for commercial leasing to private developers.

The department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) cut the proposed Wind Energy Area to 742,974 acres (3,006.7sq km) from 826,241 acres (3,343.6sq km) earlier this year. The reconfigured area now contains 117 whole lease blocks, down from 132, and 19 partial ones, one less than before.

BOEM says its actions were in response to the fishing industry and other stakeholders who submitted comments and concerns after the agency announced in February the location of the earlier area.
