Vestas nabs local approval for 7MW turbine factory

Vestas has received approval from the local council for its planned offshore wind turbine factory in Sheerness, southeast England, though it appears that 400 fewer jobs will created than originally envisaged.

Swale Borough Council, which oversees Sheerness Dock on the Isle of Sheppey, has given the nod to the 70-hectare factory, where Vestas’ V164-7.0MW offshore turbines will be produced for the European market.

The final hurdle for the factory is the UK government, which is mulling over the planning application submitted in January.

However, Vestas has reduced the total number of jobs likely to be created at Sheerness by 20% - possibly reflecting the recently announced delays to the development of the 7MW machine.
