LEEDCo, GE agree to drop its turbine from Lake Erie project

General Electric and the developer of a demonstration project near Cleveland have come to a “mutual decision” that GE’s 4.1-113 direct-drive wind turbine is not the “right fit” for wind conditions of Lake Erie.

In a statement sent to Recharge, GE says that it does not have plans to adapt the 4.1MW turbine, which is completing validation in Gothenburg, Sweden, for the lower wind speed requirements of the Great Lakes.

“As such, the memorandum of understanding between GE and Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation for the project is being terminated,” it reads. “GE and LEEDCo have enjoyed a positive and strong relationship that will continue into the future.”

Lorry Wagner, president of LEEDCo, a non-profit entity, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment…
