Connection delays leave Brazilian wind with a 600MW problem

More than 600MW of wind farms in the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Norte and Bahia due to come on line in July will be unable to deliver power on time because of delays in connection points, or ICGs.

If developers — which include Renova Energia, CPFL and Dobrevê Energia — have their projects ready, they will not be penalised. However, Chesf, a subsidiary of state holding group Eletrobras, which is responsible for building the ICGs, is likely to face fines.

Transmission lines for various electricity projects across the country are sorely behind schedule, with delays blamed on the difficulty in securing licensing from environmental agencies and poor management.
