Siemens confirms Chile debut with 115MW wind order

The purpose of this project is to assess whether direct drive technology is competitive with geared machines for large turbines. Wind power business is one of the major contributors to the Siemens environmental portfolio. Siemens will supply 50 machines to El Arrayán in Chile

German turbine manufacturer Siemens has confirmed that it will supply 50 of its SWT-2.3-101 machines to the El Arrayán wind farm in Chile, as first reported by Recharge on 8 May.

The wind farm is being developed by Pattern Energy and AEI. The mining division of Antofagasta, which is the parent company of Minera Los Pelambres – the power offtaker – has also purchased a stake in the project.

The 115MW contract with Siemens includes a five-year service and maintenance agreement. Installation is scheduled to begin in spring 2013, with commissioning planned for early 2014.
