Tribe seeks injunction to halt California Ocotillo wind project

The Quechan Tribe of the Fort Yuma Indian Reservation has filed a lawsuit in a US federal court seeking a permanent injunction against construction of the 315MW Ocotillo Wind Express Facility (OWEF) in southern California.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar earlier this month approved siting the project, under development by a subsidiary of Pattern Energy, on 10,151acres (41sq km) of public lands in the Ocotillo Desert. When fully built, the 112 wind turbines will provide electricity for about 94,500 homes.

In its complaint filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of California, the tribe says the lands are given protection by the California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA) plan.
