Panama to hold new tender after dropping 5% limit on wind energy

Panama has scrapped a law limiting wind energy to 5% of its power consumption — and plans to hold another tender this year.

The presidential decree should provide a boost for developing wind projects in the Central American nation after the industry failed to get off the ground, despite several fiscal incentives.

Government sources have not indicated when the tender will be held, or how much capacity may be on offer — other than to say bidding will be held this year.

Panamanian representatives plan to travel to Uruguay to see how that country is dealing with the increased penetration of wind power in its system, a government source tells Recharge.
