US agency advances review of offshore wind grid proposal

The Interior Department (DOI) on Monday announced that it will move ahead with an environmental review necessary to grant developer Atlantic Grid Holdings a right-of-way for the first proposed US subsea grid to support offshore wind energy development.

A right-of-way grant occupies a corridor 200 feet wide (60.9 metres) and is anticipated to extend about 790 statute miles (1,271km) to accommodate parallel, redundant circuits. Full construction of all phases of the multi-stage project would take about 10 years.

DOI’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) found there is no competing interest from other wind transmission developers for the right-of-way sought by Atlantic Grid for its Atlantic Wind Connection.
