China starts vital UHV lines to carry wind power from its west

China has started work on two ultra-high voltage (UHV) power lines to carry electricity from the wind-rich western provinces to its central cities.

The new lines, already delayed by a year, are widely expected to help ease the bottleneck in transmission of wind power.

China is the first country to develop UHV transmission lines on a commercial basis, driven by the need to feed its power-hungry cities in the east with energy largely produced in remote regions in the west.

UHV power lines allow for a huge quantity of electricity to be transmitted down a single line and, when in direct current (DC), over vast distances with minimal power losses.
