Gamesa makes first-quarter loss despite higher revenues

Spanish wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa made a net loss of €21m ($27.1m) in the first quarter of the year – blaming the “temporary impact” of price competition in China and higher costs.

The deficit compares to a profit of €13m during the same three months of 2011, and comes despite a 33% increase in revenues to €777m from €585m.

The company showed a before-interest-and-tax (Ebit) loss of €5m, against a gain of €28m in the first quarter of 2011.

The wind group’s Ebit margin was -0.6%, compared to 4.7%. However, Gamesa says it is still in line to reach its guidance and show a profit and a positive free cash-flow in 2012.
