In Depth: Belfast Harbour ready for life as a renewables hub

Ports up and down the eastern coast of England and Scotland are battling each other for a share of the North Sea offshore wind market. Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland, Belfast is quietly and methodically consolidating its position as the key renewables hub for the Irish Sea.

Although smaller than the North Sea market, the Irish Sea still represents an immense opportunity — and Belfast faces less intense competition than ports in the east of the UK.

Belfast Harbour acts as the economic lungs of Northern Ireland: two thirds of everything imported into or exported out of the province passes through its waters.

Although it is only the tenth-largest port in the UK according to cargo tonnage, it is the biggest in terms of size, with a horizon-stretching 8sq km under management, including its own commercial airport.
