Diver dies at Alpha Ventus offshore wind farm in Germany

The Alpha Ventus wind farm

A diver died yesterday while carrying out underwater maintenance work at the Alpha Ventus offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

A rescue operation was launched when it became clear the 48-year-old British man was in difficulties while carrying out repairs on the upper part of turbine foundations, says operating consortium DOTI.

An initial examination by a doctor suggests the diver died of a heart attack, according to a statement. A full autopsy will be held.

The 60MW Alpha Ventus, Germany’s first deep-water offshore wind farm, began producing power in 2009.

DOTI is owned by utility giants EWE, E.ON and Vattenfall.
