E.ON to turn tiny Heligoland into offshore wind hub

E.ON's O&M base will employ up to 150 full-time workers, more than one-tenth of Heligoland's population

After two years of negotiations, utility E.ON has signed an agreement to site its operations and maintenance (O&M) base for the Amrumbank West offshore wind farm on Heligoland – a tiny archipelago located nearly 50km off the German North Sea coast.

The 28-year agreement will make it easier for E.ON to service the 288MW project, which will be its first commercial offshore wind farm in German waters when it is commissioned in 2015.

The O&M base will employ as many as 150 full-time workers – or more than one-tenth of the archipelago’s total population.

E.ON intends to invest heavily in the base, including plans to expand the southern harbour to accommodate a slew of new service and storage facilities, as well as building new piers and breakwater structures.
