Birds and turbines: not such a bad mix after all

An authoritative study has found no evidence that large numbers of birds are killed each year by turbines.

Wind projects do not cause long-term damage to most avian species, researchers say.

The British Trust for Ornithology and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Scotland examined the impact of wind farms on birds during construction and long-term operation.

Researchers monitored ten species at 18 UK wind farms, and found that the main threat to species is during construction, when red grouse, snipe and curlew populations declined.
