Glosten, Michigan group seeks DOE funding for PelaStar

The designer of the PelaStar floating tension-leg turbine platform (TLTP) has joined a public-private consortium in Michigan that will apply for federal funding that would help cover the cost of an offshore demonstration project in one of the Great Lakes.

Charles Nordstrom, lead engineer for the PelaStar concept at The Glosten Associates , tells Recharge that the Seattle-based marine consulting firm will supply its technology should the consortium obtain the financing.

The US Energy Department will make available up to $180m over six years to support as many as four “innovative” offshore wind farms. DOE will make an initial $20m commitment this fiscal year ending 30 September to cover up to 80% of a project’s design, with the balance to come from applicants.
