2011 Canadian wind record likely to be surpassed this year

Canada installed a record 1,267MW of new wind capacity in 2011 and will surpass that mark this year, according to the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA).

The trade group says about 1.5GW is expected to be built this year, growth of more than 18%.

Canada ended 2011 with just over 5.4GW of installed capacity and is en route to nearly doubling installed capacity to more than 10GW by 2015.

Ontario, with 1.97GW including more than 500MW last year, is leading the country in wind development, and will likely retain the top position thanks to ongoing support for its feed-in tariff, even if prices for wind have been reduced slightly.
