Poland awards 4.5GW of offshore wind zones, relents onshore

Poland's government has awarded three offshore development zones to the country’s largest power utility, PGE.

Having received more than 50 expressions of interest for offshore wind farms in the Polish Baltic Sea, the government has given the green light to five projects totalling 4.5GW of capacity – including the three awarded to PGE.

PGE believes it can build as much as 1GW of capacity in its zones, and is understood to be in discussions with Areva regarding a partnership on the projects.

There was a sting in the tail, however, with the government apparently halting further concessions due to their potential to interfere with shale-gas exploitation.
