In Depth: E.ON plans giant project at ‘best wind site in the Baltic’

The pieces are starting to fall into place for E.ON’s €2.2bn ($2.9bn) vision of a 300-turbine wind-power development off the southeast coast of Sweden that could flow as much as 3.8 terawatt hours a year into the European grid from 2018.

Located in water depths of 12-30 metres at the maritime boundary between Sweden and Poland, Södra Midsjöbanken has been described by the utility as “the best development site in the Baltic Sea”.

The seabed was studied by marine surveyor MMT last year, and historic meteorological data gathered nearby suggests wind speeds faster than nine metres per second at an 80-metre hub height.

The Swedish Energy Agency is now working through the utility’s licence application for the wind farm, which would cover a 250sq km area some 100km offshore with a potential…
