First REpower 6MW turbine is installed at Thornton Bank

The first of 48 REpower 6M turbines destined for the next phases of C-Power’s Thornton Bank wind farm has been installed off the coast of Belgium.

Rated at 6.15MW, the machine – which has 126-metre-diameter rotor with a swept area of almost 12,500 sq metres – currently holds the title of the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbine.

Thirty 6Ms will this year be erected on pre-installed quattropod jackets by the Deme-owned GeoSea Neptune crane jack-up vessel, with a further 16 in the frame for installation by mid-2013. When fully developed, Thornton Bank will have a capacity of 295MW.

“With the first REpower 6M installed offshore, we’ve delivered the first turbine of that size to global ‘water-world’,” Log in to read complete article.
