In Depth: Getting up to speed on wind measurements

Fixated as it is on advancing turbine technology and developing projects, the wind industry often gives short shrift to another fundamental element: understanding and predicting the wind itself.

Even seasoned developers find themselves lulled into a false sense of faith in existing wind-resource data, particularly in long-studied, much-developed regions such as Europe.

But the reality is that the data is — at best — in an eternal state of flux. At worst, it is incomplete or even wildly inaccurate, says Jos Beurskens, a multi-decade veteran of the European renewables sector, with former ties to the European Wind Energy Association and the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands, among others.
