French debut for Alstom's first 6MW offshore machine

French engineering group Alstom today unveiled the first prototype of its 6MW direct-drive Haliade offshore wind turbine at Carnet, in northern France’s Loire-Atlantique region.

The first Haliade 150 machine will undergo a series of tests over the next year at the Carnet site in preparation for certification.

A second turbine will be placed at sea off the Belgian coast as part of the extension of the Belwind wind farm project in autumn 2012.

Pre-series production is planned for 2013, with commercial manufacturing scheduled to start the following year.

Alstom says it chose Carnet, on the shores of the estuary near Saint-Nazaire, because of characteristics that are very similar to the offshore environment in which the turbines will eventually…
