Iberdrola ends 2011 still the biggest beast in the wind jungle

Last year saw Spanish utility Iberdrola keep its lead in wind-power installations and total capacity among the leading international developers.

Iberdrola installed 1.16GW of new capacity in 2011, compared to 1.78GW the previous year, bringing its total in place to 13.69GW.

Portuguese-owned EDP Renovaveis (EDPR) installed 806MW and reached 7.48GW. US company Next Era increased its capacity by 762MW to 8.38GW – although much of this was through acquisitions and repowering, rather than greenfield installations.

Iberdrola’s fellow Spanish developer Acciona installed 651MW, bringing its total wind capacity to 6.92GW.

Italian renewable energy giant Enel Green Power added 887MW of wind in 2011, putting it in second place among non-Chinese developers…
