The
proposed
site
of
the
200MW
project
is
in
water
depths
of
more
than
30
metres,
with
a
soft
seabed
and
strong
waves.
Those
conditions
would
make
conventional
pile
foundations
difficult
and
costly.
“We
looked
into
pile
foundations,
but
the
marine
mud
layer
is
relatively
soft
and
the
sand
layer
underneath
is
quite
thin.
We
would
have
to
drill
through
the
mud,
sand
and
into
the
rock
layer,
so
it
would
be
very
expensive,”
explains
project
development
manager
John
Chan.
