Lake Erie developer gets power deal for pilot wind farm

A Cleveland-based developer has won a commitment from a municipal utility to purchase 25% of the power from a proposed pilot wind farm in Lake Erie, and is in discussions with other potential off-takers for the rest.

Details of the deal with Cleveland Public Power remain confidential, Lorry Wagner, president of Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation (LEEDCo), tells Recharge. He acknowledges that it will be necessary to lock in buyers before it can attract up to $150m of private finance for the 20-25MW project.

A non-profit economic development group, LEEDCo has no equity stake in what is now envisaged as an array of five to seven turbines from preferred supplier GE, although investing in it “could make sense in the future”, says Wagner.
