Group details possible Long Island offshore project timetable

The developer of a proposed wind farm off the south shore of Long Island says that the US Interior Department (DOI) could issue three key decisions this year that would give the project a chance of meeting an ambitious commercial start date sometime in 2016.

DOI’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) in March or April will determine whether interest exists among any other wind developers for the 64,500 acre (261sq km) area in the Atlantic Ocean sought by the LI-NYC Offshore Wind Collaborative (OWC).

Assuming BOEM finds it can issue a “non-competitive” lease, OWC this summer will submit a site assessment plan to the agency, which oversees wind energy development in federal waters on the outer continental shelf.
